{January 9, 2008}   The Question of Alien Life

People often debate about the theory of sentient life existing on other planets elsewhere in the universe, and whether any of this other life is dropping by our planet to pay us a little visit, scare our cows, or do experiments on our bodies involving anal probing.

Think.

What do you think the odds are of their being life on other planets elsewhere in the universe?

Unless you are a religious person with the belief that G-d created the entire expanse of this seemingly endless universe solely to house human beings on this tiny little planet called Earth and thus would say zero percent chance, then if you are to believe in a near infinite universe, now matter how small a probability you think their is of sentient life forming being able to form on another planet somewhere, it is likely to happen a near infinite number of times. That is the nature of infinity.

Ponder.

So, I think you all gather that I believe their is life elsewhere in the universe. Aside from the likelihood of it based on probability in a near infinite universe, I think it is rather Earth-centric of us to believe G-d would have created this entire universe only for our race of beings. That seems kind of big-headed and self-importance of us to think that.

As for the question of life having visited this planet…

I seriously doubt it (although I will not rule it out as a definite possibility) and here’s why:

Let’s say their happened to be several races of sentient beings from other planets out their whose planets were perhaps older or whose civilizations were perhaps merely that much more advanced, and they were able to create space ships that could travel incredible distances between planets, stars, and galaxies…

Why in the universe do we think they would, A.) find us in the first place, B.) care about scaring our cows and plowing crop circles, C.) want to anally probe us, D.) not want to kill us or contact us, but instead just frighten people out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night with no explanation? What makes us so important that all these aliens from all over the place would want to bother visiting our planet and bother doing anything to us? So, if aliens have visited, my guess is maybe one, possibly two, but not as many as all the crazies out there would have us believe. It just sounds self-important and unrealistic to think they would.

Amanda says:

A. They would find us because we have satellite transmissions that not only broadcast to the entire world, to many galaxies beyond, and they should have the techonology to pick up these signals. They’ve been doing this at scientific research facilities for decades

B. Isnt it possible to fathom that crop circles are language used by them, directions for other crafts, artwork, or some other rudementory thing we dont understand? After all, they are a different species.

C. It is a well known fact the the anus has thousands of nerve endings, and it is the most sensitive orifice on the human body. What better way to learn about our kind?

D. Why would they want to kill us? They obviously think they need to learn something about our society, otherwise they wouldnt be performing tests.

What makes you think they even know how to communicate with us? Most accounts see no recolection of mouth, so telepathic communication is probably natural for them. In which case, the aliens, would not know of such thing as “talking”.

Responses:

A. They might /not/ have the technology to pick up these signals. They could be so vastly different from us physiologically and culturally that they would have no need of such a device. Also, there is still the possibility that we are more advanced then all other species in “hearing” distance of our transmissions and that could be a reason why they would not have the technology as well. Also, there is the possibility that there is no life in “hearing” distance of our transmissions. Also, if there was life with the technology to receive our transmissions, they wouldn’t necessarily have the space travel technology to come find us (we don’t.) If a transmission reaches life out there in the universe and they don’t have technology to come find us in space, but do have the technology to send a signal back to us, the further out there they are trying to send a signal back, the longer it will take to come back and we would not be able to receive it in our lifetime (so we may have made contact and won’t know it for a long long time.) There is this problem with far-distance space travel where you can send someone far out into space but they could never return because by the time they got back they would not have aged too much while everyone they knew would most likely be dead already (depending on how far out into deep space we are talking.) There’s a really good anime movie about that concept that is absolutely the most depressing thing I’ve ever watched, but I can’t think of the name at the moment, I’ll mention it later if I recall.

B. I would say it is fathomable that is what crop circles are (although you would think a species intelligent enough to find us here and merely observe us without contact would realize that those crop circles are impermanent and will most likely be gotten rid of quickly–unless of course they are smart enough to pick out poor crazy farmers who will leave the crop circles there for show, who knows.)

C. You make a good point.

D. I don’t think the would necessarily want to kill us, I didn’t say that. I also said I would think they would attempt to communicate, and figure a space-faring species would be intelligent enough to make some kind of attempt to communicate (and not just via farmers and their butts.) Maybe they are just biding their time and trying to determine the best way to communicate and who best to communicate with without our governments freaking out and blowing them out of the sky, that is a possibility, perhaps they’ve watched ID4. And I did not mean I think the aliens would “talk” with us via “mouths.” I did, however, assume they would want to communicate somehow. There are many ways to communicate. Telepathy and talking are two of many. If they were telepathic, this would seem a great opportunity for them because I think our brains are capable of telepathy and we just don’t know how to tap into that resource (after all, we only use 10-12% of our brains, we could be able to do a lot with them!) But, as I just mentioned, I’ll concede the possibility they’re biding their time and studying so as not to get blown up by this seemingly war-bent world of ours. (I mean if we’ll kill each other on our own planet so quickly and easily, an alien would probably assume we would be even less hesitant about destroying them.)

Mr. Mike says:

Do you try to communicate with the clouds, or with jellyfish? And what telepathic discussions have stars and anaerobic bacteria had with you recently? I think the problem we as humans run into is that we can’t begin to comprehend a form of communication or message that doesn’t involve dialogue in a give-and-take format. You all make some great points, but I think it’s pointless to question how alien life may communicate because it is probably nothing remotely close to what we know. That’s because we have a very unique set of biological and evolutionary systems that could only exist on this one planet. I’m not saying vocal chords or eyes or wings or whatever wouldn’t happen elsewhere, but it’s unlikely it’d be similar enough to us for us to know we were being spoken to.

kaykays says:

We might not have as unique of systems as you may think which could possibly lead to similar biological evolutionary systems on other planets. I was just reading an article about the moon Titan and how it’s surface is almost identical to earth’s but with methane instead of water running the lakes, evaporation, clouds, rain show, and ice crystal dunes instead of sand dunes. This makes scientists think that if similar conditions to earth can exist easily within our own solar system, that it is likely other planets with similar conditions exist all over the galaxy and universe in other solar systems, and all it would take is them being close enough to the sun to support life (like the case is with earth) and there’s a pretty strong likelihood then that other solar systems have life supporting planets with systems extremely similar to our own and since organisms evolve due to adaptation to their surrounding environment, if environments are similar than adaptations and thus evolutions might be similar. While all will take different roads and end up vastly different over time, there could easily be common threads.
